Sedation Dentistry

Sedation Dentistry

Dental anxiety is common. Many prefer to skip their dental appointment for the fear of facing their dentist and associate dental procedures with pain. At Complete Dental Care of Avon, our dentists are adept at sedation dentistry which involves the use of certain drugs to calm and relax the patient before a dental procedure. This allows the patients to relax and control their anxiety.

Who can benefit from sedation dentistry?

All those who have the fear of being on a dental chair are candidates for sedation dentistry. Children and adults who are anxious as well as those prone to syncope or white coat syndrome, can immensely benefit from it. People who have a tendency to be nauseous or have had previous bouts of dizziness at such settings can opt for a dental treatment under sedation.

What are the different kinds of sedation dentistry?

Nitrous Oxide:
Nitrous oxide is the most common method of sedation used. It is also the safest and gentlest form of sedation. A mouth cover or mask will be placed on your mouth and nose during the entire course of treatment, through which you will inhale nitrous oxide. This will put you at ease while relaxing you and you may feel a bit giddy. After the procedure is done, you will be administered oxygen to reverse the effect of nitrous oxide. Once the effect wears off, adults can drive themselves home after their visit.

Oral Conscious Sedation:

Depending on whether you need a mild or a moderate level of sedation, you will be administered a prescribed pill just before your dental appointment. You will feel more relaxed and at ease before your procedure. Patients typically feel groggy after the completion of the procedure and we recommend someone to drive you home after your appointment.
