Emergency Dentistry
In broad terms, an emergency is a situation that requires urgent resolution or intervention to prevent any damage of any form. A dental emergency is a situation that can jeopardize your oral health or even endanger your overall health if not treated immediately. At Complete Dental Care of Avon we have an experienced team of dental professionals who are trained to handle any dental emergency in an expert manner.
Dental emergencies come in many varieties. Sometimes it can be escalation of pain from a bothersome tooth or an unexplained facial swelling.
At other times, it could be the result of a trauma – a vehicular accident, or sports incident that can crack a tooth or even knock one loose. Other urgent dental needs include lost fillings, a loose dental crown or the beginning of an infection. Our team at Complete Dental Care of Avon wants you to call us right away when you have any type of dental concern. If it needs immediate treatment, we will ensure we find space in our schedule to get you emergency dental care.
At Complete Dental Care of Avon, we understand that the patient is in trauma not only physically but also mentally and therefore we offer same-day appointments to cater to your emergency whether you are an existing patient or new to our practice. We accept many dental plans and have payment options available.
Here are few dental emergencies one may encounter and steps you can take –
Toothache
Over-the-counter analgesics may work in a toothache if the pain has not escalated. However, if you wait long enough and the pain becomes unbearable, these analgesics become ineffective. In any case, avoid keeping aspirin tablets in your gums near the painful tooth, it will only result in chemical burns. Placing a cold compress can help control swelling if one exists. Floss the area to ensure there isn’t any food entrapment. Avoid actuating factors such as hot and cold beverages, sweets, spicy, or extremely hot foods or chewing to avoid a trigger.
Abscess
An abscess is a swelling near an infected tooth and often is a sign of heavy bacterial infection. If you notice a swelling anywhere in your mouth or even outside of the oral cavity, contact us immediately, considering the fact that an abscess can easily spread to the adjoining areas such as your jaw and even to the bloodstream. You can apply an ice pack or a cold compress and warm saline rinses to control the pain. Nevertheless, you will need an antibiotic prescription from your dentist to control the spread of the infection.
Knocked-out or Avulsed tooth
An avulsed tooth is the one that has come out of the tooth socket due to trauma to the jaw bone. If your tooth is loose but still in its socket, avoid touching it with your tongue frequently and call our office immediately where we offer same-day appointments for such dental emergencies.
If your tooth is already out of its socket, just run some clean water over it. Never try to scrub it clean since the living tissue over the root is much needed to re-bond the tooth into its socket. Use a “save-a-tooth” kit or a small container of whole milk to preserve the tooth till the time you can get to the dentist. Call us at 317-271-3079 to be seen right away.
Broken Tooth
In case of a chipped or cracked tooth, you can completely trust the professionals at Complete Dental Care of Avon to provide you with the best treatment in an expedited manner. A chipped tooth compromises the health of the entire tooth by exposing the tooth blood and nerve supply to oral bacteria. Therefore, it is imperative that you visit us for an immediate assessment of the damage and repair of the chipped tooth. We offer tooth-colored restorations to repair the chipped part whereas for greater damage dental crowns are placed on the tooth to provide strength to the tooth and protect it from further damage.
Dislodged tooth filling, orthodontic brackets, wires, crown or a dental bridge
A dislodged restoration, dental crown or dental bridge is a choking hazard and should be treated as a dental emergency. Call us for advice on how soon you need to be seen. You can take the crown off if it is loose enough to prevent swallowing. We will examine and take x-rays to determine if the crown can be recemented or not and suggest the next course of action.
Bleeding tongue or cheek from biting
Bleeding from vascular parts of your mouth such as cheeks and lips can be profuse and can escalate into a dental emergency swiftly. Place pieces of gauze and apply strong and localized pressure on the bleeding spot for 10-15 minutes to stop the bleeding. Avoid dabbing or taking off the gauze to check if the bleeding has stopped. You can also use tea bags to control bleeding. Tannins in teas (black, green, white, oolong or herbal teas) have astringent effect and help with blood clotting. Just soak the teabag in warm water, wrap it up in cotton gauze and press it upon the bleeding spot. Call us immediately if the bleeding does not cease.
