TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) Treatment
TMJ disorders are fairly common and can manifest in various ways. This condition develops when there is a problem with one or both the temporomandibular joints, one on each side of your head, located in front of your ears or there is a problem with the muscles responsible for chewing.
If you have been experiencing pain in your jaw joint or if there is discomfort or clicking sounds during the opening and closing of your jaws, schedule a consult with us at Complete Dental Care of Avon for a complete examination.
What are the symptoms of TMJ?
TMJ disorders often manifests in ways that appear to be unconnected with your jaw. People often experience severe headache or ear, neck and face pain. People who have the habit of teeth clenching, grinding their teeth in sleep develop discomfort in their jaw joint. Other obvious symptoms include difficulty chewing or biting down or a popping or clicking sound, with or without pain, when opening and closing the jaw.
What are some of the treatment options for TMJ disorders?
At Complete Dental Care of Avon, we will always recommend the least invasive treatment to begin with. Some of the treatment options include but not limited to –
• exercise of the joint- certain jaw exercises and massages for your jaw muscles along with hot fomentation of the joint i.e. application of moist heat to the tender areas.
• Counselling on ways to avoid clenching or grinding of teeth and biting your fingernails and habits such as leaning on your chin.
• Custom made nightguards for you to wear while sleeping to avoid teeth grinding or clenching.
• Drug therapy- for aggravated conditions.
• Surgery-some patients may require surgical procedures to treat TMJ disorders. This is not to be taken lightly and is performed as a last resort.
Discuss with your dentist to know the exact cause and the treatment options for your TMJ disorder. Book an appointment with us today to get all your questions answered.
